Tamarind (Tamarindus indica) is a leguminous tree bearing edible fruit that is indigenous to tropical Africa and naturalized in Asia. The tamarind is a long-living, medium-growth tree that attains a typical height of 12–18 metres, with an irregular, vase-shaped crown up to 12 metres wide. Its trunk may grow to a circumference of 7.5 metres. The tree grows well in full sun and prefers clay, loam, sandy, and acidic soil types, with high resistance to drought and wind-borne salt. Its evergreen leaves are alternately arranged and paripinnately compound, with bright green leaflets less than 15 centimetres long. The branches droop from a single central trunk as the tree matures and are often pruned in agriculture. As a tropical species, it is frost-sensitive. The flowers bloom inconspicuously, with small, pale yellow petals that are obovate to spatulate and often marked with red or pink streaks; they are 1–2 cm wide, five-petalled, and borne in small racemes. Each flower is covered in a bud by four sepals that are often yellowish with red streaks, which are lost when the flower blooms.
